When I moved to L.A. with my band, The Rich, we were a family. We were a band. We were friends. We were business partners.
We lived in Venice, California. Then I moved to Santa Monica with my fiancee, Rita Wolf. That's where I wrote the song, "House of Rejection."
We had great live concert versions of that song with big long psychedelic solos. It was always a little different as we allowed ourselves to express ourselves in our solos and perhaps grow a little too.
The band on the cover and inside album cover is a later version of The Rich. A record producer, Mark Paladino, wanted to get me a record deal and produced some songs of me in the studio. He recommended I hire the musicians on the cover for my next band.
John Merritt cut my first album, TEMPTATION, in 1984 at Cherokee Studios. Mike Thompson, now in The Eagles, cut the organ tracks on the TEMPTATION album at Capitol Records recording studios. Oh yeah, and John "Jack" Sherman cut the guitar solos at Cherokee Studios before he got hired by The Red Hot Chili Peppers to record their first album.
My favorite version of the The Rich was in 1979 and 1980 with Vinnie Lauria on guitar, me on bass / vocal, and Bill Stewart on drums. We have some live recordings to cassette that I'd love to release to at least our fans...The live album is called "The Rich Live in Venice."
We became The Rich, in San Diego, before we moved to Los Angeles. I used that band name until 1984 when Mike Thompson convinced me to change the name of the band to Richard Connor.
Here's a marquee from Madame Wong's West of our band, formerly known as The Rich, and now called, Richard Connor.
That year, Michael J. Fox got onstage with us and got me famous and created my name change to "Coyote." Needing a first name, I became, The Coyote. Now in 2008, after graduating the www.actZEN.com website, I am, The Hippy Coyote.
My dad used to joke at me, "I named you Richard so you'd always be Rich."
Well, I guess he was right in more ways than he realized.
I am, The Rich.
